Husband of blinded student dies in custody

A man accused of blinding his wife and biting her nose off during a savage attack is reported to have died in custody in Bangladesh.

Reports from the capital city Dhaka say Hasan Syed, who is alleged to have tried to gouge out the eyes of Rumana Manzur, was being treated for mental illness at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, where he apparently died from cardiac arrest.

Manzur, 33, a Fulbright scholar completing a master’s degree at the University of British Columbia, had returned this past spring to visit her five-year-old daughter and husband when she was brutally attacked and left blinded.

Manzur’s aunt, who did not want her name used, said yesterday that the family is aware of Syed’s death but that her niece was unable to talk about it.

“We cannot comment. Right now, this is still very upsetting and the family won’t talk about it,” she said.
