ICBC defends Graduated Licensing Program

A day after a deadly crash involving a young inexperienced driver in Maple Ridge, ICBC is defending the Graduated Licensing Program.

Director of Road Safety Nicolas Jimenez say the program is working and it has saved lives despite the occasional horrific crash.

“We have seen fatal crashes involving kids 15 to 19 drop by about 65%. We have seen casualty crashes which involve injury and death drop in the same period  by 45%.We have done evaluations of the GLP program and we know it is having an impact.”

Jimenez says a 2009 review of the program found in a three year period crashes were reduced by 4,000 and 31 deaths were prevented.

He says parents must mentor their kids as they learn to drive and emphasize the dangers of both speed and carelessness.
