ICBC not allowed to track down rioters without warrant

B.C’s Privacy Commissioner says ICBC can’t use facial recognition technology to identify Stanley Cup rioters without a warrant or court order.

ICBC has been offering to match external photographs of alleged rioters against its driver license database.

The Commissioner says facial recognition has the potential to become a technology of surveillance, and we have to ensure public bodies using it or contemplating using it have proper legal authority, as well as safeguards in place to protect personal information.
