ICBC wants to test crash avoiding technology

ICBC wants to begin testing new technologies that might drastically bring down crash rates and injuries.

Road Safety Manager Sonny Senghera says ICBC would like to use taxis to test collision avoidance technology, allowing the car to react ahead of the driver.

“When you pair that up with GPS in which that technology is actually reporting back to the dispatcher, somebody else that is able to monitor the driver’s performance and identify when they are driving aggressively or in an unsafe manner we feel you have got a really good combination to be able taxis in general to be able to bring down the crash rates.”

Senghera says a study shows it could reduce crashes by up to 40-percent, and injuries by up to 50-percent.

ICBC would like to begin the test phase, Using hundreds of taxis, this summer.
