Iconic Penthouse strip club burns

The Penthouse on Seymour Street suffered significant smoke and fire damage when a two-alarm fire broke out early Wednesday morning.

A Vancouver police officer, who was patrolling the neighbourhood, noticed smoke at 4:20 a.m. and called 9-1-1. When firefighters arrived, flames and heavy smoke was pouring from the rear of the strip club.

Capt. Gabe Roder, a spokesman for Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, said the fire was difficult to fight as the Penthouse is made up of several buildings and has undergone many renovations in its 64-year history.

The fire was extinguished at 6 a.m. No one was reported injured.

Roder said the blaze started in a second floor change room. The cause is not known, but appears to be accidental, he said.

The Penthouse, which was opened by the Filippone brothers in 1947, appeared in a Snoop Dogg music video and was featured heavily in Chris Haddock’s television series Intelligence, which aired for two seasons on CBC.
