In Pictures: Occupy Vancouver settles in for third day

On its third day of protests yesterday, Occupy Vancouver demonstrators planned to make their temporary campground outside the Vancouver Art Gallery more permanent.

“The goal here is to be here as long as we need to be,” said Chris Gorman, an Occupy Vancouver organizer.

Gorman said platforms had been donated to raise the tents above the mud. He also said the occupation was striving to go green by recycling waste from the area and composting food scraps from a communal kitchen tent.

Volunteers at the tent were impressed by the amount of food donated from various organic food markets and local community businesses, and hope the generosity continues into the week.

“It’s the simplest thing we can do here,” said food tent volunteer Mya Wollf, who helped feed hundreds of protesters over the weekend.

“The sharing of food is so important for people coming together,” Wollf said, adding that she is confident the Occupy movement will strengthen as protesters get to know one another.

Local university student Lynn Stewart joined the protests Saturday and said she can’t help coming back.

“It’s very moving being a part of this, the feeling of solidarity of 5,000 people wanting change,” she said.

Stewart sat outside the gallery catching up on her studies that she has missed while at the protests.

“This is more important than class,” she said. “It’s a whole movement and it’s being replicated around the world.”
