Independent MLA says it is not a done deal to rebuild Burns Lake sawmill

The independant MLA for Cariboo North is warning people living in Burns Lake not to celebrate just yet.

Bob Simpson says it is not a done deal yet to rebuild the town’s sawmill noting big challenges.

“So this is being mischaracterized there is no commitment to rebuild the Burns Lake mill the decision will be made by Hampton in December all that has happened is the government has indicated they are willing to do some work and Hampton has some work to do. At the end of the day I think this is a delaying tactic.”

Simpson says one significant hurdle is the timber supply.

“Well they can cobble together a timber supply for Hampton but it will be at the expense at other licensees in that area, the West Frasers, the Canfors, and others that have put capitol in their mill that have made strategic investments so that their mill can continue to operate with a restricted timber flow.”

Simpson says the timber supply review for the area has not been completed yet.

He says mining is one economic option the province should be helping Burns Lake adopt.

The sawmill burnt down in January killing two people.
