Inquest into case of woman who died waiting for long-term care wraps up tomorrow

An inquest into the case of a Vancouver Island woman who died while waiting for a room in long-term care is expected to wrap up Friday.

Joan Andrews, a 76-year-old client of Community Living BC, died in February 2011 from a head injury after crawling over a bed railing.

At the time, she was living in the Langford home of a caregiver who believed she was placed on a waiting list the previous year.

In Victoria, the coroner’s jury has heard she was never put on the list because a social worker didn’t believe she needed 24-hour care.

Andrews suffered a brain injury during birth and had the mental capacity of a child.

The jury’s recommendations won’t be binding, but they could lead to improvements in the system.

CLBC has made headlines in recent months because of funding cuts that have prompted public outrage.
