Is ICBC involvement getting transit tickets paid?

New laws aimed at forcing transit fare dodgers to pay their fines have been in effect in BC for nearly six months now.

But it appears they have yet to bring in any of that money.

Among other penalties, ICBC can now refuse to renew your insurance or driver’s licence until you pay up.

So far, spokesman Adam Grossman says IBC has put holds on 583 files.

But has anyone actually come in yet to pay because of those holds?

“I don’t know if we’ve had any actual cases yet of anyone coming that’s had their renewal held up.”

Translink spokesman Derek Zabel says it’s because fare evaders have 90 days to dispute their fine, and staff have been passing information on to ICBC as soon as they’ve been able to.

As for fare dodgers who don’t drive, Zabel says a collection agency has started to comb back thru the fines to track people down.
