Is natural gas clean energy? The premiers announcement spurs argument

It may be the cleanest-burning fossil fuel, but is natural gas really a source of clean energy?

According to Premier Christy Clark, the answer is yes.

Clark told an energy conference in Vancouver today the government will reclassify natural gas if it’s used to produce liquified natural gas for export.

“So to make sure that BC can win in a global marketplace while also doing our best to make sure we’re protecting our environment, we’ll be announcing a new regulation that will define natural gas as clean energy under certain circumstances.”

Clark is pushing for three LNG plants in BC by 2020, but says even the site “C” dam would not produce enough energy to supply the operations.

Critics are slamming Premier Christy Clark’s declaration that natural gas is a source of clean energy, at least for some projects.

“so from a global perspective, it does a great deal to try and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

But Ian Bruce with the David Suzuki Foundation isn’t buying it.

“clearly it’s not going to provide clean energy, it’s going to increase our emissions.”

And NDP critic John Horgan says the change will affect BC’s emissions plans and hydro’s clean energy plans and is not well thought out.

“just making it up as she goes along.”

Horgan says Clark is only thinking of the next election.

But the BC Chamber of Commerce is welcoming the news, saying it will help build an LNG industry in BC.
