A woman suspected of impaired driving in the hit and run death of a longtime native housing advocate in Vancouver has been sentenced to more than a year in jail.
In September of 2008, Leanne Moorman killed Dennis Bird while he and his wife Madeline were in a crosswalk near the Commercial Drive Skytrain Station.
The now-29-year old, who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm, as well as leaving the scene, admits she had been partying hard.
When she turned herself in two days later, investigators learned she was driving without a licence, had a long history of drug abuse and cocaine was found in the S-U-V.
Moorman’s been sentenced to 15-months in jail, two years probation and she’s banned from driving for five years.
The victim was a 64-year old father of four who spent two decades working for the Native Housing Society.
