Job action escalates at SFU

Escalating job action by support workers at Simon Fraser University has forced the cancellation of numerous classes at the Burnaby and Surrey campuses.

SFU’s Don MacLachlan says picket lines have yet to go up at the downtown Vancouver campus.

“There is going to be pickets at certain hours on Saturday and Sunday at the Vancouver campus. Then, it would appear there’s no plan for picketing on Monday or Tuesday, but all three campuses may well be picketed on Wednesday.”

The strike involving a thousand members of CUPE local 3338 hurts students heading into their fall exams.

While many students and non-support staff may also refuse to cross picket lines, MacLachlan is hopeful the work stoppage will be brief.
