John Furlong not heading to London for start of Summer Games

The former head of Vancouver’s Olympic Organizing Committee says he won’t be going to the Summer Games in London when they start next week.

John Furlong says not only has he been busy as Executive Chair of the Vancouver Whitecaps, but as Chair of the Own the Podium program, he says money is better spent elsewhere.

“We sort of made a decision this year that we weren’t going to send an entourage to London because we wanted to invest every penny we had into preparing the team.”

Speaking on CKNW’s The World Today Weekend, Furlong says Canada’s athletes have set high targets going into the games and he expects the team to do well.

He adds he feels for the London organizers when he reads headlines detailing the problems they’re facing, but believes they will do a good job conducting the event.
