A Federal court judge has dismissed efforts to block 60 more Chinese miners from coming to BC.
Two unions sought the injunction in ongoing efforts to keep foreigners from taking jobs which could possibly be done by Canadians.
Their lawyer, Charles Gordon, says there’s no need to appeal the latest ruling which favours the operators of a new underground coal mine in Tumbler Ridge.
“Obviously, we would have been happier if the judge had said that not even a further 60 can arrive, but it does effectively put a cap after that until we can get through this process.”
H-D Mining already brought 17 workers here from China a few weeks ago.
Gordon says the company faces serious consequences if more foreign workers arrive before May.
One of the lawyers for HD Mining, Alex Stojicevic says today’s ruling is not just a victory for the company.
“But all of the Canadian contractors that gave affadavits in this case and that appeared in the court hearing because they, they also had economic interests at stake here if this injunction had been granted. These are people who are doing everything from working on the mine site to building housing for workers.”
He says his clients are also pleased work needing to be done now in Tumbler Ridge can proceed.
