Latest wildfires keep firefighters on their toes

A busy 24 hours for wildfire crews across the Lower Mainland.

Crews have control of a small blaze on Mount Fromme, which broke out this afternoon. Smoke was visible from the downtown core.

An earlier blaze was sparked near Mission in the Hoover Lake area.

Fire information officer Donna MacPherson says fire activity has been picking up.

“Even though our fire danger rating has taken a bit of a downturn, it’s still pretty dry out there and any fuels that are dry, like slash which doesn’t have roots and it can’t regenerate itself, certainly is fairly volatile right now.”

Despite that, MacPherson says this fire season has actually been below average for the number of fire starts.
