Legislature’s ‘boom box’ MLA calls it quits

MLA Kevin Krueger says he will not run in the next provincial election.

The Kamloops-South Thompson representative says he’s calling it a day for several reasons, including wanting to spend more time with his family.  He denies it’s because the BC Liberals are floundering in the polls.

However, just three months ago, Krueger was vowing he would run again – at his wife’s request.

Premier Christy Clark has thanked him for his years of service, calling him a friend and one of the most dedicated public servants she’s ever met.

Krueger has always been a big voice in the legislature, and was the centre of a lot of attention over the past legislative session.

He was known as the loudest heckler on the government side, and drove NDP House Leader John Horgan to distraction just a few weeks ago.

“Too much wine for breakfast, Honourable Speaker, perhaps too much wine for breakfast,” Krueger said of the opposition MLA.

Krueger defends heckling as part of the parliamentary tradition. And just last month, he let loose with quite a memorable tirade.

“Between [MLA] John van Dongen, and [NDP leader] Adrian Dix, and the ridiculous [BC Conservatives leader] John Cummins, there’s this conspiracy to try and discredit our Premier.”

He once shouted, “We love you, Gord!” after former premier Gordon Campbell eliminated tolls on the Coquihalla Highway.
