Liberal MP to head weekend rally at Kits Coast Guard Base

There will be another rally to try and save the Kitsilano Coast Guard base Saturday morning.

The Rally is being organized by Vancouver Liberal MP Hedy Fry.

She says it is time the federal government listened to the overwhelming chorus of voices opposing the move and warning of the consequences.

“C’mon this is…we are not beating you up as a government we are just saying look say you made a mistake say you are going to change it because lives are at stake.”

Fry says she is trying to make it a non-partisan effort and has invited everyone, even political rivals.

“And I know some NDP MP’s have accepted and are going to be coming I have not heard back from the Conservative MP’s but I am saying we are going to go there and we are going to stand up and speak and say time for you to say lets change this we are not closing the Kits Coast Guard station.”

She says while most of BC’s Conservative MP’s have either toed the line on the decision only one, Nanaimo Alberni Tory MP James Lunney has spoken against the Coast Guard cuts.

“He spoke out once and then he has been quiet as well but they are whipped these guys don’t dare say anything I mean they have been getting into trouble I know their constituents on this, but they haven’t spoken out but I guess when it comes to being afraid they are more afriad of their boss Stephen Harper than they are of the people who elected them.”

Fry says she hopes people will turn out regardless of their political stripe.

“And if British Columbians and especially people who live in Vancouver and all along the area that is serviced by this Kits Coast Guard base that we should stand up and say you know what we are going to speak together regardless of how we vote regardless of where we come from lets get together because this is about the safety of people this is about lives.”

The rally begins at 10:30 Saturday morning outside Kits base in Vanier Park.
