The NDP and the Liberals seem to be on the same page with their reaction to at least one electoral reform idea tabled by independent mla’s.
Deputy Premier, Rich Coleman, didn’t seem willing to open the door to Elections BC having a role in party leadership races.
“Well I don’t really have a comment on it becasue you know that comes up every time there is a leadership contest and parties have rules and ours are pretty strong with regards to how we run leadership campaigns and I think our last one was run pretty well.”
Coleman is also playing down any changes to union and corporate donations to political parties — and as far as moving the fixed election date from the spring to fall Coleman says why fix what isn’t broken.
John Horgan says on the issue of Elections BC running leadership races, like the Liberals, the NDP say no thanks.
“As with societies or organizations political parties should be responsible for their own affairs obviously when you are collecting money from other people that needs to be disclosed we can do that through Elections BC I believe all of the contributions over 250-dollars to my campaign or Liberal campaigns or any other camapigns are fully disclosed.”
However Horgan says his party agrees with the independents on the need to empower legislative committees.
He also says moving the fixed election date to the fall would remove perceptions of the spring budget being politicized.
