Local aboriginal activist hopes Harper is sincere about meeting with hunger-striking chief

A local organizer with the Idle No More movement says she is pleased Prime Minister Stephen Harper has agreed to meet with First Nations’ leaders next Friday.

“It’s about time. Historically, we’ve learned that there’s always purpose behind any agreements between the government and indigenous people.”

Kat Norris, an organizer of an upcoming event in White Rock for the indigenous movement, says she hopes Harper is sincere about meeting with Chief Theresa Spence, who’s been on a hunger strike since Dec.  11 in hopes of achieving such an event.

“It doesn’t mean that there are going to be any changes. Until we know what the outcome is, we don’t have much comfort. Although there is relief that he’s finally going to meet with her. She’ll finally be able to lead a normal life again.”

Spence has already said she will continue her hunger strike until the meeting actually takes place.
