Low-income seniors to get extra $50 a month

The provincial government is giving low-income seniors funding support to cover housing expenses.

Close to 7,000 people in residential care homes are getting an extra $ 50 per month.

Because many seniors spend up to 80 per cent of their after-tax income on room and board, the province is increasing the minimum monthly disposal income from $ 275 to $ 325.

This comes after the federal government boosted supplements for old-age security in July.

Earlier this year, the B.C. Liberals increased residential care rates more than $ 50 million, but they have yet to explain if that entire increase is now being rolled back.

The new rates, taking effect Feb. 1, max out at slightly more than $ 3,000.
