Unionized teachers in this province have scored another victory against the Christy Clark government.
The Labour Relations Board has ruled in favour of a ban on volunteer work by members of the BC Teachers’ Federation.
Today’s decision has dismissed claims by the BC School Employers Association most extra-curricular activities should be considered ‘unlawful’ strike action.
However, it wasn’t a complete victory.
The L-R-B has ruled teachers must still participate in some activities outside regular hours of instruction, including parent-teacher interviews and orientation for kindergarten.
The BC Public School Employers Association’s Melanie Joy sees the L-R-B ruling as at least a partial victory for her side.
“We’re pleased that the Labour Relations Board has found in favour of the BCPSEA application. The Labour Relations Board has declared that the BCTF engaged in an illegal strike by directing its members to withdraw from those activities that are part of a teacher’s work.”
That work includes parent-teacher meetings, district committee meetings, school based team meetings and others.
