Majority of ICBC workers in favour of job action

Eighty-seven percent of unionized ICBC workers have voted in favour of job action.

Canadian office and professional employees local 378 vp Jeff Gillies says the results show workers’ frustration, but it doesn’t mean there will be a full-scale walk-out.

“What we’re looking at is really some escalating job action…we’re not interested in affecting the customer service levels of ICBC, we’d like to take the approach to begin with to see if our strike vote affects the atmosphere at the bargaining table.”

He says the union is currently talking to members about what that job action would look like.

Gillies says a key issue for workers is the unwillingness of the public insurer to talk about workload, wages and contracting out.

Yesterday, ICBC went to the labour relations board to have certain portions of their workforce declared an essential service.
