Man pleads guilty in fatal hit-and-run

Varinder Badh is hoping the man guilty in the hit-and-run death of her parents in July 2008 will get “what he deserves” after he pleaded guilty Tuesday in Surrey provincial court.

Ravinder Singh Binning, 30, pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count each of dangerous driving causing bodily harm and leaving the scene of an accident.

“This is bittersweet for us, but it’s confirmation that he ran from his offences,” Badh said Tuesday morning outside court. “This doesn’t resolve anything. It’s not going to bring our parents back.”

Dilbag Badh, 61, and his wife Bakhshish, 60, were killed when their vehicle was rear-ended in the 8500-block of 128th Street in Surrey as they were returning from their daughter Rupi’s engagement party. Varinder and Rupi, who was behind the wheel, were also injured.

“(Binning) saw the carnage that he caused, he saw my baby sister crying and asking for help, he saw my mom lying on the pavement that day,” Varinder Badh said. “He knew exactly what he did. He was a coward and he was spineless. He ran.”

Varinder said she hopes that Binning’s sentence will reflect the severity of his crime and send a strong message about drinking and driving.

“Nothing is going to be enough, but some sentence in a federal penitentiary will help us move on,” she said.

Binning was sentenced last month on unrelated charges. He pleaded guilty to impaired driving, obstructing a police officer and trying to evade police on March 15, 2009, just eight months after the fatal hit-and-run.
