Mayor backs overnight safety measure for Lions Gate Bridge

In the wake of a double fatal collision on the Lions Gate Bridge, the mayor of West Vancouver is backing calls to close the centre lane overnight.

Mayor Michael Smith says it seems to be a sensible and logical move, “We don’t want a situation where not only were two people killed, but also one of our drivers and some of our passengers were injured, so it’s obviously a very unfortunate incident. And why have people travelling in the middle lane at a high rate of speed if you don’t need the middle lane because of the volume of traffic?”

But Smith notes the decision rests with the provincial government — the operators of the bridge.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak was asked for her thoughts on the idea, but would only say ministry staff always review the safety of different road corridors.

The middle lanes of the Pattullo Bridge are shut down every night, but that crossing is operated by Translink.

Wednesday night’s crash on the Lions Gate killed two young men from Richmond — police believe the driver was speeding.
