Mayors oppose pipeline expansion

Mayors in Vancouver and Burnaby strongly oppose a $ 5 billion expansion to Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline.

Burnaby’s Derek Corrigan says the plan to finish twinning the pipeline is a lot more ambitious than had been discussed.

He says he’s concerned about triple the amount of tankers coming into Burrard Inlet.

“and though they don’t initially say the supertankers will be part of that, I suspect that they will soon follow and we’ll end up with some of these massive tankers because they believe they can bring them into the port.”

Corrigan adds Premier Christy Clark should put British Columbians ahead of her relationship with the Federal Government and weigh in on this.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is worried about the expansion’s potential harms to the environment.

He says he’ll make sure the city has a strong voice at the federal hearings.
