Meet John Doe: RCMP unveil 3-D model of murder victim

In true CSI fashion, RCMP have generated a 3-D facial reconstruction of a man found murdered on a beach near the University of B.C. in the hope that it will solve a six-year-old mystery.

The man’s decomposing body was discovered on Oct. 6, 2006, in a sleeping bag on the shore of Tower Beach in the UBC Endowment Lands.

In an “out-of-the-ordinary” attempt to discover his identity, police used the remains to construct a rough 3-D model of the victim’s face.

Cpl. Shawna McPherson, who created the clay model, used science and art in a two-part process. First she determined the tissue-depth markers to create the basis of the face, and then she created the structure of the eyes, nose and ears that could not be determined from the body.

The victim is described as a man 25 to 45 years old, five-foot-five to five-foot-nine and about 176 pounds. He had a pronounced overbite and severely crooked lower teeth. He also had a tattoo on the left side of his chest.

McPherson is hopeful the model will prompt tips from the public.

“I feel a great responsibility,” she said. “I’m dealing with a family member of someone and often they are not even aware of the demise of the individual. I’m obligated to do my best to do justice to the reconstruction.”

Anyone who recognizes the man is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
