Meeting hears the ups and downs of gambling

Over 250 people jammed a town hall in south Surrey to voice their opposition to a 100 million dollar entertainment complex and casino.

People in the community raised concerns over spiking crime rates, money laundering and addiction issues if the casino is built.

Representatives of the BC Lottery Corporation and Gateway Casinos refuted those concerns saying, among other things, casinos don’t cause a rise in crime rates.

That didn’t sit well with some, “Listen to what all these people in here are saying. Don’t sluff them off like it’s a myth and then say, well, we have all these programs, you know for helping people. Tell that to the people that commit suicide or their families that are left over.”

The group opposing the casino is pushing for a city-wide referendum on the issue.
