It’s taking longer than expected for the Federal Government to implement a new policy for mental health in the workplace. It was supposed to be done this month.
The National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace will establish voluntary guidelines for employers. It has been in the works more than two years.
Labour Minister Lisa Raitt says it should be ready by Christmas, “I don’t anticipate it to be any longer than the next month or so and that’ll allow me as the Minister to talk about it a little bit more and for employers to take a look at it and see if there’s something they voluntarily want to implement in their workplace.”
Raitt says mental health issues are the leading cause of disabilities in Canada with costs linked to workplace losses reaching almost 20-billion dollars.
