Minister not ready for changes to the FVRD

BC’s Community Minister is taking one option right off the table as Abbotsford looks to opt out of the Fraser Valley Regional District.

Ida Chong says she is willing to at least have a healthy discussion about re-drawing regional district boundaries, “Perhaps it is time to take a look at them. I am alright with that prospect but to suggest that they become their own regional district is not something I am contemplating.”

Chong says Abbotsford is leaving its neighbours out of the equation as they try to opt out of the FVRD, “There are regional services that are being provided and for one jurisdiction to say they are no longer part of that, you know, could create significant hardship in smaller communities that is not healthy for us as a Province.”

Despite not having the support of Abbotsford’s new Mayor, City Council has voted a second time to try and leave the FVRD.
