Minister says: fare evader loophole now closed

You may have heard this before: the free ride on Translink is over.

That’s what newly appointed Transportation Minister Mary Polak is saying after moving to fill a loophole in legislation brought in last spring to enable Translink security staff to fine fare evaders.

“Well clearly the free ride for fare evaders is over, I was briefed yesterday on the loopholes that needed to be closed, it was our mistake, I signed off on that yesterday and that will indeed close the loophole that allows people to ride for free, that’s over.”

Polak says the loophole that allowed scofflaws to avoid tickets by not producing their I-D on demand may have been the result of the rush to pass the bill.
