MLA fears bad outcome of Coast Guard closure

The BC Liberal MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano says the Federal Coast Guard cuts are just one tragedy away from being reversed.

Ralph Sultan says he would prefer to have the Coast Guard than not, “You know it will only take one or two really bad incidents to turn this thing around in a hurry, would be my forecast. Lets hope it never happens.”

Sultan says the Feds promise safety won’t be affected, will have to be tested over time, “They argue that servicing the emergency calls out of Sea Island will be good enough. We will have to wait and see. We are very reliant on volunteers with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.”

He adds the Coast Guard cuts don’t seem to be bothering people in his riding.
