More freedom for cop killer

A man who murdered an RCMP officer in Richmond and three other people in Vancouver more than 30 years ago has been granted more freedom from prison.

The National Parole Board has determined Steven Leclair will be allowed to spend eight hours twice a month with his wife of 15 years.

The 66 year old, currently serving a life sentence at the minimum security Ferndale institution in Mission, had been seeking unescorted day passes.

In 2010, he was granted escorted leave and hasn’t violated any conditions of release since then.

Leclair’s not allowed to consume any alcohol while in his wife’s custody.

He’s been behind bars since 1980 and has been eligible for parole since 2002.

He was 34 when he killed three people at the Palace Hotel on Hastings Street before hijacking a car, driving to Richmond and killing 26-year old Constable Tom Agar at the front counter of the RCMP detachment.

He was arrested after another officer he shot in the leg shot him.
