One solved, but 17 other cases still remain open.
The RCMP has now confirmed a man who died in a U.S. prison in 2006 is responsible for one of B.C.’s Highway of Tears victims.
Bobby Jack Fowler is believed to have killed 16-year-old Colleen MacMillan, who disappeared in 1974 while hitchhiking along Highway 97.
Her DNA has been linked to Fowler, a transient labourer who worked for a Prince George roofing company in 1974.
He has been eliminated as a suspect in eight of the other 18 cases, but may also have killed Gale Weys of Clearwater and Pamela Darlington of Kamloops.
“We are asking you, the public, to think back to the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and your own memories of that time period. Then have a look at his photos and please call us with any information you have about him,” says RCMP Insp. Gary Shinkaruk.
Cold case investigators in the U.S. are also trying to find out where he was before May 1992.
Police say DNA samples from truckers and cab drivers have been reviewed, but none of the suspects are cabbies. Mounties cannot confirm any truckers have been ruled out.
