Local governments who are balking at a new 20-year contract with the RCMP have been given a month long extension.
But Justice Minister Shirley Bond wants a firm answer by June 30th.
Bond says most municipalities have already signed the new contract, but there are some holdouts.
“We’re working with them as closely as possible to answer questions, to deal with concerns that they have and we will continue to do that over the next month, but we do need to bring this to conclusion, I’m concerned about the responsibility under the Police Act, that there needs to be certainty for people in British Columbia, and it’s a requirement under the Police Act.”
But NDP public safety critic Kathy Corrigan wonders why the rush and says local governments should be given more time to mull over the deal.
Prominent hold-outs include Burnaby, Richmond, Port Coquitlam and the District of North Vancouver.
