Motorcyclist in hospital after crash that closed Massey Tunnel for hours

A motorcyclist is in hospital with serious injuries after losing control and crashing on Highway 99 at the Massey Tunnel shortly before 11:00 last night.

Corporal Peter Somerville with Deas Island RCMP says the motorcyclist — who is in his forties — was travelling northbound.

The bike appeared to be weaving in and out of traffic, but not going faster than traffic.

“According to witnesses, at one point he just seemed to drift to the left, and when he did that, he caught a foot peg on the raised ledge that goes through the tunnel and then wound up sliding against the wall, losing control of his bike, and being thrown from his motorcycle.”

Somerville says the man will have a lot of rehabilitation ahead of him, but says it looks like he will survive.

He says police aren’t sure yet if alcohol is a factor.

The crash closed the tunnel for several hours.
