NDP say some Tory ministers have some explaining to do

The NDP MP for Vancouver Kingsway calls it a strong message expressing the will of Canadians after pro-life motion was defeated in the House of Commons

Don Davies says although votes on issues of conscience are difficult to predict he felt it would be defeated going into the vote.

“But I was surpised to see a number of the Conservative cabinet vote in favour of the motion including, funny enough, Minister for the Status of Women Rona Ambrose so Jason kenney also voted for the motion so clearly there are some cracks and issues within the Conservative cabinet and within the Conservative caucus.”

Davies says Ambrose has some explaining to do

“By voting for a motion voting against what i think the vast majority of women in this country feel is an important element of equality and that is their right to control their bodies and their right to reproductive freedom. I think that Ms. Ambrose..I relaize that this can be a difficult issue of conscience but I think she might have some explaining to do as to how she squares that position with her responsibilities as the Minister responsible for the status of women in this country.”

He also says he would like to see more free votes in the House of Commons.

I think so, I personally like free votes I like votes where MP’s are free to vote according to their conscience or according to how they feel their constituents would want them to vote.”

The free vote saw the motion defeated 203 votes to 91.
