New SFU complex to make some space

A $ 65-million student- union building is in the works at Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby campus that would add 100,000 square feet of student space, as well as an outdoor stadium, the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) announced Monday.

The addition will be built in the Lorne Davies Complex at the south end of the Terry Fox Field. It will include lounge space, individual study areas, meeting rooms, recreational facilities, and a 2,500-seat outdoor stadium. “Since 1989 the campus population has doubled. We didn’t have enough space then and we still don’t have enough now,” said Jeff McCann, president of the SFSS.

Undergraduate students will vote on the project in an online referendum from March 20-22.

If the project is given the green light, full-time undergraduate student levies will increase by $ 10 beginning in 2014 and will continue to increase in $ 10 increments over a 30-year period to fund the project. If approved, it is slated to open in 2017.
