New virus, related to SARS, causes concern

Health care workers around the province are being told to be on the alert for patients who may be returning from travel to Saudi Arabia if they’re showing any signs of severe respiratory illness or renal failure.

This after a new respiratory virus related to SARS is believed to have killed at least one person in Saudi Arabia and left another in critical condition in Britain.

Doctor Danuta Skowronski with the BC Centre for Disease Control says provincial health authorities are on alert to watch for the virus.

“we are notifying our health care workers across the province as are other areas to be on alert for patients who may be returning from travel to saudi arabia if they are presenting with severe respiratory illness or renal failure.”

Skowronski added “whenever there’s a novel virus and especially post SARS a novel coronavirus we need to pay close attention.”

The germ is a corona-virus from a family of viruses that cause the common cold as well as SARS.
