Notorious sex offender facing more charges

Convicted sex predator Martin Tremblay, who police allege has terrorized young Aboriginal women on the Downtown Eastside, is facing seven more sexual assault charges.

The charges against Tremblay involve four young women between the ages of 14 and 19 and date back to 2005, Vancouver Police Insp. Brad Desmarais said Thursday.

Tremblay is facing three counts of sexual assault, two counts of administering a noxious substance and one count of obtaining sexual services for money from a person under 18.

Tremblay was arrested by RCMP in Chilliwack on Tuesday as he was about to get on a bus back to Vancouver, after serving an 11-month sentence at the Ford Mountain Correctional Institution.

In February, Vancouver police took the unusual step of publicly naming Tremblay and urging victims to come forward.

The new charges were recommended after more young women came forward with new allegations, Desmarais said.

Lisa Yellow-Quill of the Battered Women’s Support Services said she hopes this arrest will deliver a strong message to the public that violence against aboriginal women and girls is not acceptable.

“I want to acknowledge and say thank you to the young women who came forward and were so courageous to relive those moments to make sure that (the suspect) is held accountable for his actions,” she said.

Desmarais said a total of 11 alleged victims have contacted police and they are continuing their investigation for outstanding cases. Police are expecting to lay more charges against Tremblay.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
