Occupy Vancouver protesters evicted again

VANCOUVER – Protesters at the new Occupy Vancouver site have been ordered to pack up and leave by 5 p.m. today, less than 24 hours after they relocated to provincial land at the Law Courts.

B.C. Supreme Court Judge Anne MacKenzie found the group to be a public nuisance and in contempt of court after she ordered them evicted from city-managed land outside the Vancouver Art Galley yesterday.

But MacKenzie stopped short of issuing a blanket injunction that would prevent protesters from setting up on any new public lands, saying that would be speculative and an inappropriate use of the law.

Government lawyer Craig Jones asked for a broad injunction, saying the campers would otherwise move from property to property.

He said protesters were “thumbing their nose” at the courts by simply picking up and moving to a new location after the city sought the first injunction.

Protesters have said they will move their tents to various properties to make their point about economic inequality and social injustice issues such as homelessness.
