Olympic village debt update

The city of Vancouver’s debt on the construction of the Olympic Athletes Village has been whittled down another $ 12-million dollars since October. Taxpayers still owe $ 434-million dollars on the billion dollar loan ensuring construction of the False Creek complex in time for the 2010 games. A report going to city council Tuesday shows 80 per cent of housing and more than 90 per cent of commercial spaces are occupied or leased. High-profile tenants including London Drugs and Urban Fare are also slated to open by summer. Last year, the debt was reduced from $ 446 million dollars… thanks to the sale of 177 homes, as well as 10 properties transferred as security from the troubled developer Millenium.
