Parents in New Westminster are concerned about teachers serving as school trustees.
Wendy Harris, chair of the city’s district parent advisory council, says a possible bias toward their union could impair teachers from serving fairly on the board of education.
Her council is seeking to have teachers take a leave of absence before becoming a trustee.
“The public deserves a full board able to consider all issues collectively to support good decision-making in the best interest of the electorate, unencumbered by outside undue influence.”
Three teachers serve on New Westminster’s board.
The BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils will debate a resolution on the topic at its annual general meeting next month.
Harris was speaking on The World Today Weekend with CKNW’s Sean Leslie.
