PNE lets the dogs out at annual fair

The annual Fair at the PNE finally arrives on Saturday and promises one of the most unique and exciting years yet — as well as a culinary adventure for those brave enough to take on its wacky fair food menu.

The new victim of the deep fryer is the strawberry Pop Tart, while the biggest new stars will be the PNE hot dogs and their various forms.

Hotdog headliners include the Piggy in a Poncho, a gourmet hotdog with a Mexican twist and the Funky Monkey, the banana-and-chocolate dessert dog.

If you’re really feeling courageous, however, you can take on the Double Dog Dare Ya, a two-foot-long behemoth covered in chili, grilled onions, grilled peppers, cheese sauce and bacon bits.

It was created by John Earnshaw, PNE’s  food and beverage manager, who said he can only hope someone will be able to conquer the feast themselves.

Giving your stomach a break from the fair food, you can also check out many more new and traditional attractions at the PNE including POP City, Superdogs, the Rib Festival and the Summer Night Concerts series.

You can even escape the hubbub of the Fair and explore Container Art, presented by local artists, or listen to acoustic music at World on the Water.

“The PNE is the place where B.C. really does come together to celebrate the end of summer,” said Laura Ballance, PNE spokeswoman, “We are constantly changing up what goes on every year to reflect the dynamic nature of our city.”

PNE basics
• When: Aug. 20-Sept. 5.
• Hours: 11 a.m. until late.
• Admission: $ 20 at the door.
