Premier’s new press secretary downplays BC Rail scandal memo

Nothing to see here.

That appears to be the message from the premier’s incoming press secretary about a recently-unearthed memo signed by Dave Basi, one of the men who pleaded guilty in the B.C. Rail scandal.

Basi claims in the memo, signed before the 2003 raid on the legislature, that fellow accused Bobby Virk allegedly told him that Christy Clark, then deputy premier, had probed Virk for details about the process involved in the deal.

Appearing on CKNW’s World Today Weekend, press secretary Mike Morton says he’s surprised by the amount of media attention the memo received.

“I was quite shocked that it got the attention it did, ’cause I certainly didn’t believe that it deserved the coverage that it got.”

Basi had confirmed he indeed wrote the memo. However, he’s unable to elaborate because of a gag-clause in the government’s $ 6-million deal to cover his and Virk’s legal fees.

Clark has long denied any wrongdoing in the case.
