A retired University of Victoria political science professor says there is a good reason there is so much secrecy around the appointment, or not, of BC’s Auditor- General.
Ron Cheffins says, as with most jobs, the personal information of the applicants, or why they weren’t hired, is protected, “That of course, involves a great deal of privacy. People apply and they don’t want to have their application out in the air because if they are not accepted they are publicly rejected. So there is a reason for secrecy.”
Cheffins says the problem is, the parliamentary system, as the Government can stack a committee examining applicants, “The bad news about that is, it’s a disincentive for parliamentary officers to be critical of Government.”
He says there really isn’t a solution other than hoping for “objective good will.”
