Prostitution critics want police to impound johns’ cars to curb sex trade

A month after Ontario’s top court struck down a ban on brothels, claiming they’re safer than making prostitutes work off the street, opponents are hoping police step up efforts to cut off the demand for the sex trade.

Hilla Kerner with the Women’s Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution supports impounding johns’ vehicles – something police in Winnipeg do.

“If there is a will, there is a way. There are many ways that the criminal justice system can stop men from violence against women. All forms of male violence, including prostitution.

“All these years, whenever the police took a stand against prostitution, it was to further harass and exploit the prostituted women. It was never to hold men accountable or to stop them.”

Vancouver police have expressed support for the program, but B.C.’s justice minister fears it would be subject to what she’s calling a “significant charter challenge.”
