The provincial government is doing away with the standard school year calendar.
This opens the door for school districts to schedule classes as they see fit.
Education Minister George Abbott says the move takes effect in the 2013-14 school year.
Abbott says for many learners that two and a half month break period is actually something that’s pretty unconstructive from a learning perspective.
He says kids lose some of their learning over that long break.
Vancouver School Board spokersperson Kurt Heinrich says it sounds like a good move.
He says the time line for the change should give them enough time to come up with ideas on a more flexible and balanced calender.
