Questions being raised about independence of new Independent Investigations Office

It’s called the “Independent” Investigations Office — but questions are already being raised over the new body’s relationship with the mounties.

It turns out, members used RCMP vehicles in Prince George — where they were probing a fatal shooting involving a local officer.

IIO Spokesperson Owen Court explains the circumstances…

“They arrived in town shortly after midnight I understand on Tuesday morning. At that point, it’s my understanding that there were no rental cars available to them… so they did utilize a couple of unmarked RCMP vehicles.”

Court says rental cars were hired later that day.

But David Eby with the BC Civil Liberties Association says the optics are terrible.

“I don’t understand why the Independent Investigations Office would make such a mis-step right off the bat, and I think the goal should be to be independent, which could include renting your own cars and facilities for interviews, these kinds of things… I think that they’re going to have to be very careful.”

Eby says his organization has met with the new office to share their concerns.
