RCMP respond to Human Rights Watch report

The RCMP says it takes allegations of police abuse in a recent report “very seriously”, but it needs more details to take proper action.

Chief Superintendant Janice Armstrong says some of the allegations outlined in the
Human Rights Watch report looking at policing along the highway of tears, have been reported but she says they want to investigate all of the accusations.

She says, “Quite frankly, if our Members have engaged in any of these allegations then they need to be held accountable and we’re very serious about holding them to task for that.  But we need the information to come forward.”

Armstrong says if the victims don’t feel they can go to police they should talk to a trusted First Nations elder.

She met with authors of the report yesterday and says they will meet again Friday.
