Regions worry about overall RCMP costs

The Provincial NDP’s public safety critic is warning municipalities might be on the hook for more than just RCMP pay hikes.

Kathy Corrigan says E-Ddivisions new headquarters could come with a hefty price tag, in Burnaby alone, “They are saying the costs could be well over a million dollars a year just to pay for the new E-Division Headquarters. I don’t understand why the Provincial Government has not better protected the interests of local government. I don’t understand why the Federal Government has such a high-handed approach to municipalities and the taxpayers of this Province. And, the municipalities in this province are the ones who are going to end up eating it with huge increases again.”

She says committee’s formed in the new RCMP deal, so municipalities can consult on RCMP costs, also appear to lack any teeth.
